Au Revoir to Lorrie Key Upon Her Retirement

Lorrie Key

Lorrie Key retires on Thursday, Nov. 30. Please join us in bidding her au revoir at her retirement party, Nov. 30, 3-5 p.m., in the SFSC University Center lobby, Highlands Campus. In the meantime, she had a lot to tell us:

How long have you been with SFSC and what various positions did you hold?

I’ve been with the college for 37 years, starting at South Florida Community College in November 1980. I worked under all four presidents—Drs. Stallard, Cornelius, Stephens, and Leitzel—and worked in many different buildings on the Highlands Campus–except the library and the theater.

My former husband and I owned our own business. Soon after that I realized that living and working with each other all the time wasn’t healthy for our relationship. So I got a job in the business office at the Florida Center for Addictions on College Drive in Avon Park.

Then I started having children and stayed home to raise them. When my children were little, I started a child care business in my home. When my youngest child turned 3 years old, I decided I needed more adult interaction. Someone told me the college was looking for a teacher’s aide for its child care department and that I would be able to bring my 3-year-old. In 1980, I became the teacher’s aide.
